National Heroines and Heroes of Nicaragua
National Heroines and Heroes of Nicaragua are named by a legal decree of the Nicaraguan Legislature. They honor people who helped the country gain independence or defend its sovereignty and self-determination. The title was originally National Heroes of Nicaragua, but in 2014 Law No. 859 it was changed to National Heroines and Heroes of Nicaragua. The law also says the honoree must be deceased, and the nomination must include endorsements or certificates from public or private groups—such as unions, artistic associations, sports organizations, or schools—that confirm the person’s service and heroic actions.
