Rock It for Me
"Rock It for Me" is a song written by twin sisters Kay and Sue Werner. It was released as a single in 1938 by Chick Webb and his orchestra, featuring singer Ella Fitzgerald. The track reached No. 19 on the US Billboard chart. Its lyrics reference the term "rock and roll" with the line, "won't you satisfy my soul with the rock and roll?" The song also mentions "a new kind of rhythm" and says, "I'm all through with symphony," noting that while opera used to be popular, today the rage is rhythm and rhyme. The phrase rock and roll appeared in blues and jazz before the 1950s, with writers like Maurie Orodenker using it in 1942. Disc jockey Alan Freed helped popularize the term in the early 1950s.
