Nathan Wood (footballer, born 2002)
Nathan Wood is an English footballer who plays as a centre-back for Southampton in the Premier League. Born on 31 May 2002 in Ingleby Barwick, England, he is 1.88 m tall.
Early life
Wood is the son of former pro Dean Gordon. He grew up in an athletic family and took part in various sports as a youngster. He played for TIBS and Stockton Town before joining Middlesbrough’s academy in 2015. He attended Conyers School in Yarm and appeared in a CBBC documentary series Our School in 2014.
Club career
Wood signed professional terms with Middlesbrough on 1 July 2018 and became the club’s youngest-ever player, making his senior debut in an EFL Cup match against Notts County at 16 years and 72 days old.
He spent time on loan at Crewe Alexandra in 2021 (12 league appearances) and at Hibernian later that year (1 league appearance).
In June 2022, Wood joined Swansea City on a two-year contract, making 66 league appearances and scoring 1 goal over two seasons.
In July 2024, he moved to Southampton on a four-year deal. He made his Southampton debut in an EFL Cup win over Cardiff City on 28 August 2024 and his Premier League debut on 4 December 2024 in a loss to Chelsea. He scored his first Southampton goal on 20 December 2025 in a draw with Coventry City.
International career
Wood has represented England at multiple youth levels, including U15, U16, U17, U18, U20 and U21. He made his England U20 debut on 6 September 2021 and his England U21 debut on 28 March 2023.

Wood is known for his pace and has previously played as a left midfielder. He showed notable speed in his youth, recording a 100m time of 13.07 seconds at age 13.
