Nanook River

The Nanook River, meaning “polar bear,” is on Victoria Island in northern Canada. It starts in the island’s central plain, in the Northwest Territories, and ends in Nunavut, emptying into Hadley Bay in Viscount Melville Sound. The river begins south of the Shaler Mountains, about two hours by Twin Otter north of Cambridge Bay. It flows east, goes through a rapid, and enters Namaycush Lake. It then moves north through several lakes, the largest about 10 km long and 7 km wide. The last 8 km include several rapids before the river reaches Hadley Bay. No glaciers feed the river. Plants along the river include lousewort, Arctic poppy, aven, sedge, and willow thickets. Animals in the area include Arctic fox, lemming, muskox, snowy owl, and Peary caribou, with polar bears common at the mouth.
