My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic season 9
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Season 9 is the ninth and final season of the series. It has 26 episodes and originally aired on Discovery Family from April 6 to October 12, 2019. The story follows Twilight Sparkle as she prepares to become the ruler of Equestria when Princess Celestia and Princess Luna retire.
A new team of villains forms. Grogar, an ancient ram, brings together Chrysalis, Tirek, Cozy Glow, and a resurrected King Sombra to take over Equestria. Twilight and her friends defeat Sombra early on with the Elements of Harmony, but Sombra destroys the Tree of Harmony and the Elements in the fight.
A twist comes when the villains empower themselves with the Bewitching Bell and betray Grogar, draining his magic to reveal that Grogar is actually Discord in disguise. Discord explains that his plan was meant to prepare Twilight for her future role as ruler. The villains launch a full-scale attack on Equestria: Cozy Glow drains magic from Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, Tirek defeats the Pillars, and Chrysalis attacks the School of Friendship and captures Starlight.
Twilight and her friends rally to fight back, though the battle leaves many questions open to interpretation, including future relationships such as Applejack and Rainbow Dash, or Fluttershy and Discord.
Guest voices in Season 9 include Patton Oswalt as Quibble Pants and Weird Al Yankovic as Cheese Sandwich. Hasbro announced the ninth season in 2018, confirmed it would be the final season, and writing began in 2017.
