Muscari azureum
Muscari azureum, the azure grape hyacinth, is a small bulbous perennial in the Asparagaceae family. It grows in alpine meadows in north and east Turkey and reaches about 4–15 cm tall with two to three grey-green leaves per bulb. In spring it produces up to 60 bright blue flowers in a dense spike, each 4–5 mm long with a darker stripe on the lobes. The flowers have an open bell shape, a feature of its subgenus Pseudomuscari. It is frost-hardy and prefers full sun. Gardeners grow it as a spring bulb in rock gardens or under shrubs. It has appeared in cultivation under other names such as Bellevalia azurea and Hyacinthella azurea, or Hyacinthus azureus. A white form, 'Album', exists. It has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
