Murder of Karolin Hakim
The murder of Karolin Hakim
Karolin Hakim, a Swedish doctor and new mother, was shot and wounded on the morning of 26 August 2019 in Malmö, Sweden. She died later at the hospital. The shooting happened near the Ribersborg beach park while she was with her partner, Naief Adawi, and their two‑month‑old baby. Authorities said Adawi was the person targeted in the attack.
On 28 August, Sweden’s Minister for Home Affairs, Mikael Damberg, visited the crime scene. A 19-year-old man was arrested on 29 August; he owned the car used to escape. He was released later but remained under investigation. In September, a 23-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and carrying an illegal firearm. By late September, police still needed to gather statements from more than 100 witnesses due to a shortage of investigators.
On 23 October 2019, police released camera footage showing the main suspect at the crime scene; the photo was published by the newspaper Expressen. The public broadcaster SVT chose not to publish it.
Hakim had just finished medical studies and was mother to a two‑month‑old baby. She had witnessed a previous murder in Malmö. She was buried on 18 September 2019 at St Pauli Norra Kyrkogård cemetery in Malmö. A public ceremony was held at Luftkastellet, and about 150 people laid flowers at her coffin.
