Mugdho Mancha
Mugdho Mancha is an outdoor cultural stage in Uttara, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Built at Botomool near the western end of Rabindra Sarani in Sector 7, it serves as a venue for street theatre, book fairs, film screenings, and other cultural events.
The site began as a street theatre hub organized by Gitanjali Lalitkala Academy in 2016. It was named Language Warrior Poet Mahbub Ul Alam Choudhury Mancha to honor Bengali language movement activist Mahbub Ul Alam Choudhury. The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) later committed to building a proper stage at the location, with support from the academy’s founder, Mahbub Amin Mithu.
In 2022, the outdoor stage was inaugurated and renamed Bangabandhu Mukto Mancha in memory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. In 2024, it was renamed Mugdho Mancha to remember Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, a student who died in the July mass killings in Azampur, Uttara.
Over the years, the venue has hosted many events, including street theatre in 2016, a book fair and cultural festival in 2019, and various cultural programs tied to national holidays. It has also supported activities during the COVID-19 pandemic with public health measures. Local cultural groups have organized festivals for Victory Day, Genocide Remembrance Day, and Independence Day, and the site has hosted Durga Puja and other community programs in subsequent years.
In January 2025, vandals damaged portraits of those killed in the July massacre displayed at Mugdho Mancha, prompting protests and calls for action. Authorities pledged to address the incident. In April 2025, the structure was repainted, and there were plans for a permanent redesign. On May 2, 2025, the Capital Development Authority indicated plans to present Mugdho Mancha in a way that honors the July Revolution, and a park behind the stage was proposed to be named after Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdha. The reconstructed stage was officially inaugurated on August 4, 2025.
