Mr. Men
Mr. Men is a British series of children’s books created by Roger Hargreaves. The first books came out in August 1971 and every book features a character with one clear personality trait, like Mr. Tickle or Mr. Clever. The idea is to tell a simple, friendly story that teaches a small moral.
In 1981, Roger began a companion series called Little Miss, with female characters, while an animal-themed set called Timbuctoo started in 1978. After Roger Hargreaves died in 1988, his son Adam Hargreaves continued writing and drawing new Mr. Men and Little Miss stories, starting with several new characters.
By 2021, there were 92 Mr. Men and Little Miss characters in books, and the series had sold over 200 million copies in 28 countries. The stories take place in a fantasy world called Misterland and often feature recurring characters like Walter the Worm.
The books are short and have bright, simple illustrations. The first book, Mr. Tickle, was inspired by Roger’s son Adam.
The books spawned several TV series. In the 1970s and 1980s, The Mister Men and a Little Miss TV series aired in the UK, with later versions and specials. A version called The Mr. Men Show aired in the 1990s and early 2000s in the US and UK.
In 2011, Sanrio bought the rights to Mr. Men and Little Miss from Chorion. New characters and editions appeared in later years, including a 2016 lineup to mark anniversaries. A fresh Mr. Men and Little Miss TV series was announced in 2021, and in 2024 Watch Next Media took over production with plans for more development in the future.
