Mount Vernon Trust Company
Mount Vernon Trust Company was a bank in Mount Vernon, New York, from 1903 to 1952. It began after the Bank of Mount Vernon was sold to local businessmen A. A. Lisman, Dr. Archibald M. Campbell, John T. Wintjen, and Mark D. Stiles in late 1902 for $705 a share. The bank changed into a trust company and opened on May 31, 1903, in the old Bank of Mount Vernon building at First Street and Third Avenue. The building was built by Dawson Archer. It started with $200,000 in capital and $200,000 in surplus. Early leaders included Archibald Campbell (president) and A. A. Lisman (vice president).
By October 1, 1904, deposits reached about $1.16 million, and a 1% quarterly dividend was paid to stockholders of record on November 1, 1904. In 1928, the Mount Vernon Trust Company rebuilt its First Street building at a cost of more than $500,000; the new building opened on June 16, 1928. The bank had two branches to serve east and west Mount Vernon. On July 18, 1930, it merged with American National Bank and Trust Company, increasing its capital to $1.5 million and giving the combined bank about $31.25 million in assets, making it the largest commercial bank in Westchester County. Archibald M. Campbell, the longtime president and chairman, died on August 31, 1930.
On March 28, 1952, Mount Vernon Trust Company merged with County Trust Company of White Plains, effective April 1, 1952. Fred E. Goldman was president of Mount Vernon Trust and became senior vice president of the merged bank, whose resources totaled about $200 million. A quarterly dividend of 50 cents a share was declared in April 1952. In November 1953, County Trust Co. sold the former Mount Vernon Trust building to Dutchess Owners Inc. of White Plains.
Headquartered at 20 East First Street, Mount Vernon, NY, the Mount Vernon Trust Company’s key leaders were Archibald M. Campbell (chairman, CEO) and Mark D. Stiles (president). Total assets were about $1.5 million.
