Moses Brown Ives
Moses Brown Ives (July 21, 1794 – August 7, 1857) was a prominent businessman and philanthropist from Providence, Rhode Island. He was a partner in the mercantile firm Brown & Ives, served as president of Providence Bank, and was a trustee of Brown University as well as treasurer of Butler Hospital.
Born in Providence, he came from a family connected to Rhode Island’s early merchants and to the founders of Brown University. Ives graduated from Brown University in 1812, studied at Litchfield Law School, and spent time in Europe before returning to business.
In 1833, he married Annie Allen Dorr, sister of reformer Thomas Wilson Dorr, and they had two children. Ives’s bequest helped provide early funding for Rhode Island Hospital, which opened in 1863.
He died in Providence and was buried at North Burial Ground.
