Montaud, Hérault
Montaud (Occitan: Montaut) is a small mountain village and commune in southern France, in the Hérault department of the Occitanie region. It consists of about a dozen hamlets and has basic facilities such as a school, a town hall, a church, and a few farms. About 1,000 people live there (1,014 in 2023). Many residents work in nearby Montpellier as researchers, teachers, engineers, or technicians.
Historically, Montaud has notable ties. In 1361, Cardinal Bertrand Pierre, a papal agent, died in Montaud. In 2004, children from Montaud participated in a space‑talk event via ARISS, speaking with astronaut Mike Fincke aboard the International Space Station.
The commune covers roughly 113 square kilometers and sits at elevations between 51 and 210 meters above sea level.
