Monkleigh is a village and parish in north Devon, England. It sits about 2.5 miles northwest of Great Torrington and 3.5 miles southeast of Bideford. In 2011 the population was 1,488.

The name Monkleigh comes from Old English, meaning a “monks’ wood or clearing,” tied to a 12th‑century property once owned by Montacute Priory. The area was called Lega in the Domesday Book of 1086. The village includes Saltern Cottages (also known as Annery Cottages) and Annery kilns, historic sites. It lies on high ground west of the River Torridge, offering scenic views.

Historically, the Monkleigh manor was given to Montacute Priory during the reign of Henry I and remained with the priory until the Dissolution in the 16th century. After that, the manor passed through several hands, including the Coffyn family, Rev. John Pine‑Coffin, and John Rolle, who helped develop the Rolle Canal around 1823.

Annery was a nearby estate with a neo‑Classical mansion and a fine park; the mansion was demolished in 1957. Along the River Torridge are the ruins of the Annery kiln, built around 1823–1824 for Lord Rolle.

The parish church is dedicated to St George. It contains notable features from the 15th–16th centuries, including a burial aisle funded by Sir William Hankford, a remarkable medieval wooden parclose screen (possibly dating to 1537), and monuments to the Coffin and St Leger families. The church was restored in 1862–63.

Other historic buildings in Monkleigh include Monkleigh Millhouse, Petticombe Manor, Rudha Bridge Millhouse, and The Bell Inn (originally built in the 17th century), along with various farmhouses, cottages, outbuildings, and bridges.

Transport and services: The A388 road runs through the area. There’s a ferry from Bideford Quay to Lundy Island, with the MS Oldenburg offering evening cruises along the River Torridge.
