Mohamad Sarif Pudin
Mohamad Sarif Pudin bin Matserudin, known as Md Saripudin, is a Bruneian naval officer born on 26 December 1972. He served as the acting commander of the Royal Brunei Navy from 30 December 2022 to 10 January 2025, taking over from Spry Serudi and later handing the role to Sahibul Bahari.
He joined the navy in 1990 as a recruit and studied at the University of Hertfordshire, followed by the Naval Young Officer Course at Britannia Royal Naval College. He started his career as a weapons engineer (service number 488) and rose through various leadership and staff roles, including Chief Logistic Officer (2010) and Base Commander (2011). He also worked as the Fleet Engineering Officer (2005) and Commandant of the Naval Technical Training School (2006). He earned a military master’s degree (2010) and a bachelor’s degree in engineering, and later attended the Lee Kuan Yew Senior Fellowship in Public Service in 2021.
From 2014 to 2017, he served as Brunei’s defence attaché in China, helping strengthen Brunei–China defense ties and contributing to the Beijing Military Attaché Corps. He returned to Brunei in 2019 and became Deputy Commander of the Royal Brunei Navy in January 2021, a role he held until January 2023, when he became Acting Commander.
Under his leadership in 2023, two former Singapore Navy ships, KDB As-Siddiq and KDB Al-Faruq, were commissioned into the Royal Brunei Navy. He also oversaw visits from foreign ships, including Qi Jiguang, INS Kiltan, and USS Blue Ridge. He attended IMDEX Asia 2023, represented Brunei at the International Seapower Symposium in 2023, and took part in the Multilateral Maritime Virtual Key Leaders Engagement in 2024. In March 2024, he welcomed Royal Thai Navy ships HTMS Taksin, HTMS Bhumibol Adulyadej, and HTMS Kraburi to Brunei.
Mohamad Sarif Pudin is married to Dr. Hajah Dayang Suzana binti Haji Awang Adenan, and they have two daughters. He enjoys reading, hiking, and golf.
