Midland League (Massachusetts)
The Midland League was a high school sports conference in Massachusetts that was part of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). It existed from around 1905 to 1989 and included schools mainly from Middlesex, Norfolk, and Worcester Counties, plus one school from Rhode Island. In 1989 it merged with the Wachusett League to form the Midland Wachusett League.
What it was like
- The league started in 1905 with Milford High School, Framingham High School, and Woonsocket High School.
- Because there was no statewide governing body yet, schools could form leagues with nearby or even out-of-state schools.
- Over the years, membership moved many times as schools joined, left, and rejoined.

- 1916: Framingham withdrew after a controversy over Milford’s league championship.
- World War I era: Team numbers dropped as many schools couldn’t field teams.

- 1960s: Maynard clashed with night games and other issues, causing a temporary league breakup.
- 1966: The league reformed, continuing with football in the Midland while other sports were part of a larger Central Massachusetts arrangement; Algonquin Regional High School joined.
- 1973–1974: Maynard left for the Dual County League, then returned to the Midland in 1974.
- 1975: Westborough rejoined the Midland from the Southern Worcester County League.
- 1988: Fitchburg, Leominster, and Wachusett Regional High School moved from the Central Massachusetts Conference to the Midland.

Notes
- The league did not count the 1964–1966 breakup in its long-term membership tally.
- Throughout its history, Midland teams won various MIAA state championships. Football titles were often split by region in different years, reflecting how championships were awarded during those periods.
This history shows a long-running, frequently changing league that eventually joined with another to form a new regional conference.
