Harry Roper
Harry Roper (13 April 1910 – 16 April 1983) was an English footballer who played as an inside forward. Born in Romiley, England, he stood 5 ft 10 in tall. He began playing football while working in a warehouse as a clerk and with amateur side New Mills before Leeds United signed him in August 1929.
He made his professional debut on 29 August 1932 against Blackpool and scored, but he didn’t play again that season. After a longer run the next season, he lost his place and, after a cartilage injury, left Leeds in May 1935 to join Cardiff City.
With Cardiff City, then in the Third Division South, he debuted on the opening day of the 1935–36 season in a 3–2 loss to Crystal Palace and scored his first goal in his third appearance, a 3–2 defeat to Reading. He started the season as an inside forward and later moved to half back, sharing duties with Harold Smith. He finished that season with 29 appearances in all competitions. The following season he played only four times before moving to Stockport County in October 1937, but knee injuries prevented him from making a first-team appearance there.
In total, Roper made 49 Football League appearances for Leeds United and Cardiff City, scoring five goals (three for Leeds and two for Cardiff).
