Mersal
Mersal is a 2017 Tamil-language action thriller directed by Atlee and produced by Thenandal Studio Limited, marking the studio’s 100th film. The movie stars Vijay in a triple role as a doctor, a magician, and a village leader, with Nithya Menen, S. J. Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and others in supporting roles. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman. It released worldwide on 18 October 2017 during Diwali and runs about 163 minutes, with a budget of around ₹120 crore. It became a big commercial success, grossing roughly ₹200–260 crore worldwide and was the highest-grossing Vijay film at the time.
Plot in simple terms:
Two brothers, Vetri and Maaran, are separated at birth. Vetri grows up as a magician who fights against medical corruption, while Maaran becomes a doctor who treats poor people for a small fee. In the present, a series of abductions of medical staff leads to Maaran, and Vetri uses his tricks to try to save the hostages. A long flashback reveals the brothers’ past: their father Vetrimaaran built a village hospital with good intentions, but corrupt doctors Daniel and Arjun exploited the system, harming Vetrimaaran, Maaran, and Vetri. Vetri survives, learns magic, and vows to expose the crimes; Maaran grows into a principled doctor who serves the needy. In the present, Maaran and Vetri discover they are brothers who have swapped identities. They work to reveal the corruption, rescue their family, and bring the bad doctors to justice. In the end, Maaran becomes the head of the Indian Medical Council, and Vetri continues his mission to root out medical corruption.
Reception and impact:
Mersal was praised for Vijay’s performance in three roles, A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack, production values, and its social message, though some critics felt the story was familiar and too long. It was a major box-office hit, earning about ₹200–₹260 crore worldwide on a ₹120 crore budget and expanding its release to international markets, including China in 2018. The film also sparked discussions and some controversy over GST and Digital India scenes, as well as a title dispute, but it received several awards and nominations, including Filmfare South and SIIMA honors for acting, directing, and music.
Marketing and legacy:
Mersal featured innovative marketing, including a fan-focused AI chatbot and a widely talked-about teaser. It helped boost Tamil cinema’s global presence, with a strong soundtrack and Vijay’s continued superstar status driving audience interest and box-office success.
