Maya and the Three
Maya and the Three is a nine-episode animated fantasy series created by Jorge R. Gutiérrez. It premiered on Netflix on October 22, 2021. The story is set in a version of late pre-colonial Mesoamerica and follows Maya, a young warrior princess who must answer a prophecy after underworld gods demand payment for her family’s misdeeds. If she refuses, the world could be destroyed, so she sets out to find three warriors who will help defeat the gods and save humanity. The show is produced by Netflix Animation and Mexopolis, animated with Blender 3D, and features a star voice cast that includes Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna, Allen Maldonado, Stephanie Beatriz, Gabriel Iglesias, Alfred Molina, and Kate del Castillo. It is available in English and Spanish, with episodes running about 30 minutes each (around 4.5 hours total).
Critics praised Maya and the Three for its striking visuals and rich Indigenous influences, with several noting its bold, epic storytelling and culture-inspired design. In May 2022, Netflix canceled its planned follow-up, Kung-Fu Space Punch, which had begun as a standalone feature and later became tied to Maya and the Three; creator Jorge R. Gutiérrez said the project isn’t dead, just not moving forward at Netflix Animation.
