Mauro Rivella
Mauro Rivella (born 23 June 1963) is an Italian Catholic cleric who has been the episcopal vicar for economic affairs in the Archdiocese of Turin since 2022. He previously served as secretary of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA) from 2015 to 2020 and as the delegate of the ordinary section of APSA from 2013 to 2015.
Rivella was born in Moncalieri, near Turin, and grew up in the Mirafiori Sud district. He was ordained a priest for the Turin diocese on 22 May 1988 by Cardinal Anastasio Ballestrero. He worked as avvocato generale in the diocesan curia and taught canon law at the seminary and the theological faculty.
In the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) he served as director of the juridical office and later as subsecretary. His time as subsecretary included criticism over how a priests’ abuse report was handled. After his CEI term, he briefly returned to parish work in Chieri before being recalled to Rome to work for APSA. He also served as a consultant for the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts.
In 2013 he became the delegate of the ordinary section of APSA, which handles the Holy See’s real estate and other assets, and in 2015 he was named secretary of APSA. During his time, APSA was involved in a controversial loan related to the IDI hospital case, which ultimately led to financial write-offs and public statements in 2019 by Vatican officials taking responsibility for the decision.
After leaving APSA in 2020, Rivella returned to Turin to serve as pastor of the church of St. Rita. He has been tied to rumors of bishop candidacies. On 20 June 2022, Archbishop Roberto Repole appointed him episcopal vicar for economic affairs in Turin.
