Matthias-Grünewald-Verlag
Matthias-Grünewald-Verlag is a German Roman Catholic publishing house founded in 1918 in Mainz. It is named after the painter Matthias Grünewald. The publisher grew from the Bible Movement and the Liturgical Movement, with influence from the theologian Romano Guardini. It published works such as Classics of Catholic Theology and the Mainz Bible translation by Paul Riessler and Rupert Storr.
In 1944 the Reichsschrifttumskammer closed the publishing house, and during World War II its archives were destroyed. After the war, work continued. In 1978 the company, which had been a Kommanditgesellschaft since 1938, became a GmbH. In 2006 it was transferred to Schwabenverlag AG, then suspended and liquidated. The successor company MGV GmbH was removed from the commercial register in 2009. Today Matthias-Grünewald-Verlag is part of the Patmos publishing group within Schwabenverlag AG in Ostfildern.
The logo shows the hand of John the Baptist at the Isenheim Altar. The program includes more than 900 titles, focusing on Christian theology, spirituality, self-help, psychology and pedagogy. It also publishes Gotteslob hymnals, magazines and brochures (pastoral.de). Notable authors include Anselm Grün, Romano Guardini, Gustavo Gutiérrez, Wilhelm Hoffsümmer, Walter Kasper, Pinchas Lapide, Wunibald Müller, Otto Hermann Pesch and Josef Pieper.
