Massawippi River
The Massawippi River is a short river in Quebec, Canada, in the Estrie region. It flows through North Hatley and the city of Sherbrooke and is a tributary of the Saint-François River, which eventually reaches the Saint Lawrence River.
The river starts from Lake Massawippi in North Hatley, at about 180 metres above sea level. It travels about 20 kilometres (12 miles) and drops around 10 metres before it joins the Saint-François River at Lennoxville, where the elevation is about 170 metres.
The name Massawippi may come from the Algonquin word nasawipi, meaning “between the waters,” or from the Abenaki term meaning “much clear water.” Nearby places like Magog, Lake Memphremagog, Coaticook, and Mégantic share similar Indigenous name origins.
An old railway line beside the Massawippi River has been turned into a bike path and is part of Route Verte, a network of cycling routes.
