María Conchita Alonso
María Conchita Alonso is a Cuban-born Venezuelan-American actress and singer whose career has spanned film, TV, music, and theater. She was born on June 29, 1955, in Cienfuegos, Cuba, and moved to Venezuela with her family in 1962. She started in beauty pageants, winning Miss Teenager World in 1971 and finishing in the top seven at Miss World Venezuela 1975.
As a singer, she had several hits and released music in English and Spanish. She sang Vamos a Bailar for the Scarface soundtrack, a song that became a Spanish-language classic. In 1995 she made history as the first Latin American actress born outside the United States to star in a Broadway musical, playing Aurora in Kiss of the Spider Woman. Her film career includes The Running Man (1987), Moscow on the Hudson (1984), Colors (1988), Predator 2 (1990), and The House of the Spirits (1993). She also acted on television, including a guest role on Desperate Housewives in 2006.
Alonso has earned gold and platinum albums and three Grammy nominations. She is known for her outspoken political views and has supported LGBT rights. In recent years, she has toured with shows like Despechadas and Sin Verguenza and announced a new tropical album for 2025.
