Manhattan Trade School for Girls was a New York City public high school started in 1902 by Mary Schenck Woolman. It was the first vocational high school for girls in the United States, created to train young women for jobs in trades like garment factory work. The school opened on West 14th Street and moved to East 23rd Street in 1906–07. To accommodate more students, a new building was opened in 1915 at 127 East 22nd Street. The old building now houses The School of the Future, a public middle and high school. Photos from 1916 show the school in action. A documentary about the school was made in 1911 and is included in the Treasures III: Social Issues in American Film, 1900–1934 DVD set, with a ragtime-style score by Elena Ruehr.
