Man, Myth & Magic (encyclopedia)
Man, Myth & Magic: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Supernatural is a reference work about magic, mythology and religion. It was edited by Richard Cavendish, with art direction by Brian Innes, a former member of the Temperance Seven.
Originally published in the UK as a weekly partwork by BPC Publishing, it was meant to be collected. The printer was Purnell and Sons in Leeds. Publication began in 1970 and ran for 112 issues, delivering about 1,000 articles and around 5,000 illustrations, many in full color. BPC sold binders to collect the issues into seven volumes, plus one binder for the magazine covers.
In 1970, BPC released a hardcover set that condensed all 112 magazines into 24 volumes. A revised 21-volume edition was published by Marshall Cavendish in 1995 (ISBN 9781854357311).
The material was later sold to Cavendish Square Publishing, which released ten volumes reorganized by subject, including Witches and Witchcraft and Beliefs, Rituals, and Symbols of Ancient Greece and Rome. Cavendish Square also produced a five-volume library-bound set in 2014.
More than 200 academics and specialists contributed to the work, writing in a generally accessible style.
