Chorni
Chorni (Lady Thief) is a 1982 Hindi drama directed by Jyoti Swaroop and produced by V.K. Sood for Kesar Films. It stars Jeetendra and Neetu Singh, with music by Shankar Jaikishan and lyrics by Shailendra and Sharda.
The story follows Deepa, a maid who is assaulted by a group of spoiled rich young men led by Sukhdev on a Diwali night. To save her honor, Deepa fights back but is wrongly accused by Sukhdev of stealing valuables. She ends up jailed for six months in a remand home. Four years later, she returns a changed person and gradually becomes a thief again.
Judge Sinha runs a juvenile court and believes reform is possible without jail. He and his wife Uma decide to adopt Deepa as their daughter for a year to give her a fresh start. Deepa faces difficulties fitting into her new home, especially with Uma, their daughter Rani, and other family members, but she soon makes friends with Subash, Pappu, Dolly, and Ramdeen. Dr. Vikram Sagar, the family doctor, takes an interest in her, and Deepa and Vikram fall in love. Kishore, Sinha’s elder son, who studies law, is warm to her as well.
Things look hopeful until Rakhi Day reminds Deepa of the past. Four years earlier, Kishore was among Sukhdev’s gang and fled in shame. The trouble deepens when Shambhu Dada, recently released from jail, threatens to kill Judge Sinha and to expose a scandal about Rani. With no one to turn to, Deepa is forced to steal money from her own home to pay Shambhu’s demands, and she is caught.
Sinha, shocked by what has happened, punishes Deepa and sends her back to the remand home. Kishore and Vikram work to uncover the truth about Shambhu and the real culprits, with the hope of rehabilitating Deepa in society.
