Maldives national under-23 football team
The Maldives national under-23 football team, nicknamed the Red Snappers, is the feeder team for the Maldives national team. It is run by the Football Association of Maldives and competes in AFC (Asia) and SAFF (South Asia). The head coach is Ali Suzain and the FIFA code is MDV.
Their first competitive campaign ended in heavy defeats: 0–4 against South Korea, 1–3 against Malaysia, and 0–5 against Oman. Ibrahim Fazeel scored Maldives’ only goal in that stage.
In the second round they were in Group A with India, Hong Kong, and Iran. Ashad Ali scored in a 1–3 loss to Iran. Against India, Ali Ashfaq equalized, but India won 2–1 with a late goal. They then lost 0–1 to Hong Kong.
Maldives finished 3rd in Group F of the 2010 Asian Games in China. They lost 3–0 to Oman, then drew 0–0 with Pakistan and Thailand.
In 2012 it was announced that Maldives U23 would participate in the qualifying round for the inaugural AFC U-23 Asian Cup in June 2012.
