Malaysia–Tajikistan relations
Malaysia–Tajikistan relations are the diplomatic ties between the two countries. The Malaysian embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan is also accredited to Tajikistan, while Tajikistan has an embassy in Ampang, near Kuala Lumpur. The two countries have warm ties and aim to cooperate for progress.
Diplomatic relations were established on 11 March 1992. In 2014, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon and his wife visited Malaysia at the invitation of Malaysia’s king, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.
Trade between the countries totaled about $5.5 billion in 2013, and Malaysian firms are keen to invest in Tajikistan. Both sides have said they want to expand cooperation in political, economic, investment, trade, science, technology, and culture. Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak spoke of broadening collaboration during a meeting with Rahmon.
Several memorandums of understanding were signed to boost cooperation in areas such as bilateral consultations, higher education, tourism, physical training and sports, and economic, technical and scientific cooperation, along with cooperation with the Olympic Council of Malaysia.
In 2013, Malaysia planned to build a 300-megawatt power plant in northern Tajikistan. More than 200 Tajiks study in Malaysian universities, and Tajikistan’s Ministry of Education and Science signed an agreement with Limkokwing University of Creative Technology to establish a branch in Tajikistan.
