Makerere Kikoni

Makerere Kikoni is a neighborhood in Kampala, Uganda, located about 2.5 kilometers north of the city’s central business district. It sits near Makerere University and is bordered by Bwaise to the north, Naakulabye to the southwest, Kasubi and Kawaala to the west, and the university to the east.

Once a slum with simple, semi-permanent houses, Makerere Kikoni is now mostly developed with student hostels. The change began in the early 1990s when Makerere University started admitting private students who needed housing, so some residences were turned into hostels. In recent years, more multi-storey hostel blocks have been built.

Today the area also has supermarkets, churches (notably University Church Fellowship), and hotels such as The Grand Global Hotel, J Frigh Hotel, and Sheron Hotel. It includes schools like Makerere Modern Secondary School and Caltec Academy, along with other residential developments.
