Mae West Lips Sofa
The Mae West Lips Sofa is a surrealist sculpture by Salvador Dalí in the shape of a sofa. It is light red and measures about 110 cm high by 183 cm wide by 81.5 cm deep (43 x 72 x 32 inches). The seat is made of polyurethane foam with a red finish. Dalí based the design on the lips of actress Mae West, whom he admired. He did not intend the piece to be a functional sofa. He also drew inspiration from a pile of rocks near Cadaqués and Portlligat, where he lived with his wife Gala.
Edward James, a wealthy British patron of the Surrealists, commissioned the work. Five original versions were made in 1937–38. The originals are now in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam; the Dalí Theatre and Museum in Figueres; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the Brighton Museum; and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. A 1973 reproduction was made by Bocaccio Design (BD Barcelona Design).
