Madonna of the Streets (1924 film)
Madonna of the Streets is a 1924 American drama film directed by Edwin Carewe. It is based on the 1904 novel The Ragged Messenger by W. B. Maxwell, with a screenplay by Frank Griffin, Frederic Hatton, and Fanny Hatton. The film stars Alla Nazimova, Milton Sills, Claude Gillingwater, Courtenay Foote, Wallace Beery, and Anders Randolf. It was released by First National Pictures on October 19, 1924.
The story follows Reverend John Morton, who, determined to live by Jesus’ teachings, inherits a large fortune when his uncle dies. He marries Mary Carlson, who proves unfaithful and turns out to be his uncle’s mistress seeking the inheritance. John uses his money for charitable work and later sends Mary away with his secretary after learning the truth. Years later, he regrets his harshness and is reunited with Mary when she appears at a home for fallen women that he is opening.
The film is considered lost, with no known prints in film archives.
