Měřín
Měřín is a market town in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic, in Žďár nad Sázavou District. It has about 2,000 residents (2,011 as of 2025-01-01). The town covers 17.87 square kilometers and sits at about 487 meters above sea level, with the highest nearby point at 599 meters.
Geography
Měřín lies in the Křižanov Highlands, about 19 kilometers south of Žďár nad Sázavou and 21 kilometers east of Jihlava. The Balinka River runs through the town and feeds local fishponds.
History
The first written mention of Měřín is from 1298, when a Benedictine provostship was established there. The monastery owned the town until 1470. It later belonged to the Pernštejn family (1491–1557), then the Chroustenský family and the Černá estate. After the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, the Černá estate went to the Collalto family, who owned it until 1918.
Transport
The D1 motorway from Prague to Brno passes through Měřín.
Landmarks
The main landmark is the Church of Saint John the Baptist, a Baroque church built around a Romanesque core. It preserves Romanesque and early Gothic elements, including a 13th‑century Romanesque portal. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snow, dating from 1690, is another notable building.
