Luz Maria Sanchez
Luz Maria Sanchez (born 1971 in Guadalajara, Mexico) is a sound and visual artist who makes work about violence in Mexico and at its borders. She lost her father to gang violence in 1982. She earned a PhD in Art from the Universitat de Barcelona. Using her experiences and education, she creates installations that raise awareness about violence in Mexico and along its borders. She has taught at several universities and is an author.
Notable works:
- Vis. Unnecessary Force (2014–2021): a four-part series about gang violence in Mexico, using sounds recorded during or after violent events. A website lets people listen to the audio.
- Spanglish (2005–2006): a group exhibition about the mixing of cultures at the Mexican-American border in Texas.
- Diaspora I/II (2006): a sound installation where she reads the names of 2,487 people who died at the Mexico–U.S. border.
