Luka Matkava
Luka Matkava is a Georgian rugby union player who can play fly-half, scrum-half, or fullback. Born on May 10, 2001 in Tbilisi, he currently plays for Black Lion in the Rugby Europe Super Cup and is on loan to Castres Olympique in France’s Top 14 as injury cover.
He started his career with RC Armazi before joining Black Lion in 2021, with loan spells at several Georgian clubs along the way. In 2025 he moved on loan to Castres, making his Top 14 debut as a starter at fly-half and scoring two penalties in a 52-6 loss to Toulouse. He later joined Oyonnax for the 2025-26 season.
Internationally, Matkava represented Georgia at under-18 and under-19 levels in 2019 and made his senior debut in 2022 against Uruguay. He was a regular in Georgia’s 2023 Rugby Europe Championship-winning campaign, played in the World Cup warmups (including a starting fly-half against Romania), and made his Rugby World Cup debut against Australia. In 2024 he started every game in the Rugby Europe Championship, including the final win over Portugal, and began a mid-year test series at fullback against Fiji, helping Georgia beat Japan for one of their historic wins over a Tier-1 nation.
