Lovers Speak is the fifteenth studio album by British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading, released on 25 March 2003. It was her first new studio album in eight years, since 1995’s What’s Inside. Armatrading had left major labels and released the album on Denon Music. She wrote, arranged, and produced all the songs, and played most of the instruments herself, with drums and brass on two tracks. The album contains 14 songs and runs about 54 minutes, making it her longest studio album to date. A sampler of three tracks—“Lovers Speak,” “Love Bug,” and “Crazy for You”—was released by Telstar on 10 March 2003.

Between albums, Armatrading stayed busy with other projects. In 1998 she released Lullabies with a Difference for a children’s charity, featuring contributions from well-known artists. In 1999 she wrote and performed a tribute song for Nelson Mandela. She also studied at the Open University, earning a BA (Hons) in History in 2001. She dedicated Lovers Speak to friends Gus Dudgeon and Sheila Bailey, who were killed in a car accident in 2002; Dudgeon had produced her debut album in 1972.

The album received positive reviews and reached number 42 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart. Critics praised its emotional honesty, musical breadth, and Armatrading’s strong performances. AllMusic called it a standout, with a mix of pop, folk, and jazz that’s both sophisticated and accessible. Other reviews highlighted its depth and clear messages about love and relationships. The track “In These Times” later appeared on the 2008 compilation Songs for Tibet: The Art of Peace.

To promote the album, Armatrading toured, and a concert from that tour in Saratoga, California, in June 2003 was released later as the live album Live: All the Way from America (2007). The touring band included Armatrading on vocals and guitar, Gary Foote on reeds and percussion, and Spencer Cozens on keyboards. All songs on Lovers Speak were written and arranged by Joan Armatrading.
