Long Run (Elk Run tributary)
Long Run (Elk Run tributary)
Long Run is a small stream in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, and a tributary of Elk Run. It runs about 2.4 miles (3.9 km) and has a watershed of roughly 1.92 square miles (5.0 km²). The stream rises at the top of a deep valley in Davidson Township, at an elevation around 2,360–2,380 feet, and joins Elk Run about 0.42 miles (0.68 km) upstream of Elk Run’s mouth near the Sullivan–Columbia county border. Its coordinates are approximately 41.31026°N, 76.41018°W.
Course
Long Run flows south for a short distance, then turns south-southwest as its valley deepens. It receives four unnamed tributaries (two from the left early on, and two more later) before reaching Elk Run.
Hydrology
The stream is impaired by atmospheric deposition and metals. About 4.25 miles of Long Run and its unnamed tributaries are impaired, which is a portion of the streams in the West Branch Fishing Creek and East Branch Fishing Creek watersheds. None of its four unnamed tributaries meet the state water-quality standards.
Geography and geology
The mouth sits at about 1,217 feet (371 m) above sea level, while the source is much higher at 2,360–2,380 feet (720–730 m). Much of Long Run’s valley sits on Wisconsinan Bouldery Till with boulders of sandstone, quartz, and conglomerate. Other parts lie on shale and sandstone bedrock. A Wisconsinan Till occurs near the headwaters.
Watershed
The Long Run watershed covers about 1.92 square miles (5.0 km²) and lies entirely within the USGS Elk Grove quadrangle. The streambed is publicly owned, as are Elk Run and the nearby named tributaries Hog Run and Gallows Run.
History
Long Run was entered into the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979, with the GNIS ID 1179887.
