List of tanager species

The IOC recognizes 392 tanager species in the bird family Thraupidae, spread across 107 genera. One listed species, the St. Kitts bullfinch, is extinct. The common names can be confusing: 149 species are called tanagers, while another 108 are called finches.

Tanager birds are found only in the New World—mostly in South and Central America and the Caribbean, with a few species occasionally in the United States. Note that 20 species with “tanager” in their common name in the genera Piranga, Habia, and Chlorothraupis belong to a different family, Cardinalidae.

The list follows IOC taxonomy and can also be sorted alphabetically by common name, scientific name, status, population, and trends.
