List of speakers of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly

Speaker of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the main law-making body for the union territory of Puducherry. The speaker is always a member of the Legislative Assembly.

Current speaker: Embalam R. Selvams (incumbent) since 16 June 2021.
Deputy speaker: P. Rajavelu since 25 August 2021.
Term and appointment: The speaker is appointed by the members of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly. The term is five years, with no limit on the number of terms.

Formation and history: The Pondicherry Representative Assembly was converted into the Puducherry Legislative Assembly on 1 July 1963 under The Union Territories Act, 1963 (Section 54(3)). Members elected in 1959 were deemed to have been elected to the new Assembly. The assembly began on 22 July 1963.

Inaugural holder: A. S. Gangeyan.

Elections: Elections for the Puducherry Vidhan Sabha have been held since 1964. Over the years, speakers have belonged to various political parties.
