Riccarton Bush is a small forest patch in Christchurch, New Zealand, in the suburb of Riccarton. It covers 7.8 hectares (19 acres) and is a remnant of lowland kahikatea floodplain forest on the Canterbury Plains. The area has helped the study of insects in New Zealand, attracting many famous scientists. The Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) have been well studied here: about 70% of New Zealand’s Lepidoptera families have been collected in the bush. Most Lepidoptera families are moths.
