East Germany, officially the German Democratic Republic (GDR), existed from 1949 to 1990. Until 1952 it was divided into five states (Länder): Mecklenburg, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, and Thuringia. From 1952 to 1990 it was divided into 14 districts (Bezirke), named after their capitals: Rostock, Neubrandenburg, Schwerin, Potsdam, Frankfurt, Magdeburg, Cottbus, Halle, Leipzig, Erfurt, Dresden, Karl-Marx-Stadt (renamed Chemnitz in 1953), Gera and Suhl. East Berlin was not counted as a Bezirke at first; after the 1961 Berlin Crisis and the building of the Berlin Wall, it was recognized as the Bezirk Berlin, though it kept a special status until the 1968 constitution.
