List of boroughs and census areas in Alaska
Alaska is divided into 19 organized boroughs and 11 census areas in the Unorganized Borough. For census purposes, boroughs and census areas are treated like counties.
Key ideas
- The Unorganized Borough is not a borough itself. It covers more than half the state (about 970,500 km²). If it were a state, it would be the largest in the U.S. About 10% of Alaskans live there (around 75,800 people as of 2024).
- Organized boroughs come in four classes and have local government powers. The land outside them is not part of any borough.
- The Unorganized Borough is split into 11 census areas by the Census Bureau for statistics; these areas have no government of their own.
- Some state services (like police and education funding) are provided directly by the state in parts of the Unorganized Borough.
- Seven consolidated city-boroughs exist: Juneau City and Borough, Skagway, Sitka City and Borough, Yakutat City and Borough, Wrangell City and Borough, Haines Borough, and Anchorage (the Municipality of Anchorage, a consolidated city-borough).
- Alaska uses FIPS codes (the state code is 02), so each county-equivalent has a 02XXX code.
Population and size (examples)
- Organized boroughs: populations range from about 690 (Yakutat) to about 289,600 (Anchorage); land areas range from roughly 434 sq mi (example: Skagway) to about 88,824 sq mi (North Slope).
- Census areas: populations range from about 2,300 (Hoonah-Angoon) to about 18,237 (Bethel); areas range from about 4,393 sq mi (Aleutians West) to about 145,576 sq mi (Yukon-Koyukuk).
Overall, Alaska has 30 county equivalents (19 organized boroughs plus 11 census areas), and the Unorganized Borough alone makes up a vast portion of the state.
