Azmin Ali
Mohamed Azmin bin Ali, born on 25 August 1964 in Singapore, is a Malaysian politician who has held several top roles in state and national politics. Since August 2023, he has been the State Leader of the Opposition in Selangor and the Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for Hulu Kelang.
Earlier, he was the Member of Parliament for Gombak from 2008 to 2022 and the Selangor Menteri Besar from 2014 to 2018. He served in PKR as the party’s Deputy President from 2010 to 2020 and held federal ministerial posts from 2018 to 2022: Minister of Economic Affairs (2018–2020), then Senior Minister (Economy) and Minister of International Trade and Industry (2020–2022).
In 2020, amid a major political shift, Azmin left PKR and joined Bersatu, helping form the Perikatan Nasional coalition that briefly led the government. He has since held leadership roles in Bersatu, including Secretary-General since November 2024, and was the 2nd Secretary-General of PN from December 2024 until January 2026. He has also served as PN Information Chief and a member of its Supreme Council.
Azmin’s political career began as Anwar Ibrahim’s personal secretary in the 1990s, and he later helped found the reform party KeADILan (PKR). He won Hulu Kelang in 1999, was briefly barred from contesting in 2004 (a conviction later overturned), and returned to win the Gombak parliamentary seat in 2008 and the Bukit Antarabangsa state seat. He was re-elected in 2013 and 2018, losing Gombak in 2022, and won Hulu Kelang again in 2023. His time as Selangor Menteri Besar included notable land-use decisions that drew scrutiny.
Azmin is married to Shamshida Tahrin, and they have six children. He studied at the University of Minnesota, earning a BSc in Economics and Mathematics and a Master of Education; he also completed an executive program at Oxford. He comes from a family involved in public life, with siblings including Azwan Ali and Ummi Hafilda Ali.
