Government House
Government House is the name used for the official residence of the head of state or head of government in many countries and territories in the Commonwealth and beyond. Here are some examples:
- Cayman Islands: Government House, Seven Mile Beach – official residence of the Governor.
- Dominica: Government House, Roseau – official residence of the President.
- Falkland Islands: Government House, Stanley – residence of the Governor; site of a battle during the 1982 war.
- Fiji: Government House, Suva – home of the President; built in 1928 to replace the earlier residence that burned in 1921.
- The Gambia: Government House was the former name of State House, the President’s official residence.
- Kiribati (Gilbert and Ellice Islands): Government House in South Tarawa (established 1972); became the Presidential Residency in 1979.
- Hong Kong: Government House, Central – official residence of the Chief Executive.
- India: Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi – originally Government House; housed the Viceroy, then the Governor-General (1947–1950); since 1950 it is the President’s residence.
- Kolkata, India: Raj Bhavan – Viceroy’s residence until 1911; later home of the Governor of Bengal.
- Isle of Man: Government House, Governor’s Road, Onchan – official residence of the Lieutenant Governor.
- Jamaica: King’s House, also known as Government House.
- Jersey: Government House, St Saviour – residence of the Lieutenant Governor; used by the monarch when staying in Jersey.
- Kenya: State House – formerly called Government House; now the President’s official residence.
- Mauritius: Le Réduit – formerly Government House (1810–1992); now State House and the President’s official residence.
- New Zealand: Government House, Wellington – main residence of the Governor-General; a second Government House exists in Auckland.
- Rivers State, Nigeria: Port Harcourt – official residence of the Governor.
- Sierra Leone: Government House – former name of State House, the President’s official residence.
