Founded in 1927 from a merger of Türk Ocağı and Al Yıldız İdman Ocağı, Samsunspor spent its early years in local and regional competitions. In 1965-66 the club turned professional and began playing in the national leagues (Süper Lig, First League, Second League) and in national cups such as the Turkish Cup, Prime Minister’s Cup, and the Youth and Sports Ministry Cup, and even competed in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in Europe. The team has won the First League title seven times (the most in that division) and also lifted the Youth and Sports Ministry Cup. They have spent 30 seasons in the top-tier Süper Lig, ranking 10th in all-time points, and 27 seasons in the First League with seven titles. Samsunspor has been relegated from the Süper Lig seven times, the most in league history. In 2018-19 they played in the Second League for the first time, and they won that division the following season to gain promotion.
