The 1984 Cleveland Browns season was the team’s 35th in the NFL. Owned by Art Modell, the Browns played at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. They started 1-7 under head coach Sam Rutigliano and fired him on October 22. Marty Schottenheimer, the defensive coordinator, took over as interim head coach and finished the season 4-4. The Browns ended with a 5-11 record, placing 3rd in the AFC Central and missing the playoffs. Pro Bowl tight end Ozzie Newsome was the standout player honored that year.

A notable game came against the Houston Oilers, when Paul McDonald threw three touchdown passes (two to Brian Brennan) and the defense shut down Houston. The Browns went 3-2 under Schottenheimer, and that 27-point game was their highest-scoring effort of the season up to that point. Schottenheimer would remain head coach through 1988, compiling a .620 winning percentage with the Browns.
