List of Italy national football team World Cup and European Championship squads
The World Cup and the European Championship are the main events for the Italy national football team. They happen every four years, in alternating even-numbered years. When Italy enters and reaches the finals, it names a squad of players and a head coach for the tournament.
Coaches over the years include: Vittorio Pozzo; Ferruccio Novo; Lajos Czeizler; Paolo Mazza and Giovanni Ferrari; Edmondo Fabbri; Ferruccio Valcareggi; Enzo Bearzot; Azeglio Vicini; Arrigo Sacchi; Dino Zoff; Giovanni Trapattoni; Marcello Lippi; Roberto Donadoni; Cesare Prandelli; Antonio Conte; Roberto Mancini; and Luciano Spalletti.
Notable squad changes and events
- 2000 Euros: Angelo Peruzzi was injured and replaced by Francesco Toldo. Gianluigi Buffon was injured and replaced by Christian Abbiati. Midfielders Dino Baggio and Diego Fuser, and defender Giuseppe Pancaro did not make the final squad of 22; forward Christian Vieri was injured. Roberto Baggio was controversially excluded by coach Giovanni Trapattoni.
- 1982 World Cup honour: After Italy won the World Cup for a fourth time, all squad members were awarded the Cavaliere Ufficiale honor.
- 2006: Fabio Cannavaro was injured and replaced by Alessandro Gamberini.
- 2012: Cesare Prandelli named a provisional 32-man squad on 13 May, then announced the final squad on 29 May (Domenico Criscito was not considered due to match-fixing charges).
- 2014: The final squad was announced on 1 June, with numbers revealed the next day.
- 2016: Antonio Conte announced the final squad on 31 May; Andrea Pirlo and Sebastian Giovinco were left out, and Claudio Marchisio and Marco Verratti were left out due to injury.
- 2021 (Euros held in 2021 because of the pandemic): Roberto Mancini named the final squad on 1 June. On 3 June, Sensi was replaced by Pessina; on 10 June, Pellegrini was replaced by Castrovilli.
- 2024: A 30-man squad was announced on 23 May. On 30 May, Francesco Acerbi withdrew due to injury; on 2 June Giorgio Scalvini withdrew, and Federico Gatti was called up the next day. The final 26-man squad was announced on 6 June, with Ivan Provedel, Samuele Ricci and Riccardo Orsolini cut.
