Qingdao Amerasia International School
QAIS is a private, non-profit international school in Qingdao, Shandong, China. It offers Montessori education for ages 1.5 to 5 and an inquiry-based program up to age 18. About 130 students from around 25 countries study here.
QAIS is an IB World School and offers the full IB continuum: Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Diploma Programme. Its Montessori Toddler and Early Childhood programs are accredited by the American Montessori Society, the only such programs in Asia. English is the main language of instruction, with Mandarin taught daily as an additional language.
The school began in 2006 as Qingdao American International School and, in August 2011, was licensed by the Chinese government and renamed Qingdao Amerasia International School.
QAIS is located in the Shilaoren area of Qingdao, with campuses in Shazikou, Dongjiang (Baishan Campus), and Laoshan District. The campus features classrooms, science labs, a library, a technology lab, a music/drama/violin room, a stage, a cafeteria, sports facilities, and multiple playgrounds. The upper floors host the middle and high school (MYP/DP) facilities.
Extracurricular activities run from 3:40 to 4:40 on designated days and include Student Council, Model United Nations, and a Youth Club. Students take trips to regional and international destinations, and activities like sailing, hiking, and skiing are part of the experience.
QAIS is accredited by IB, the American Montessori Society, and the Middle States Association, and is a candidate for the Council of International Schools. It is China International School No. 110. About 60% of teachers hold a master's degree or higher; all Early Childhood teachers are AMS or AMI certified, and K-12 teachers have IB training. The principal is Christopher C. Vicari, Ed.D.
