List of 4X video games
4X is a type of strategy video game. The name comes from explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. It became popular with Master of Orion (1993). In 4X games you build and manage an empire from its early days, while simulating science, economics, diplomacy, and society. There are many ways to win, not just by fighting. Precursors include the 1970s board games Outreach and Stellar Conquest. The first 4X video game is often cited as Reach for the Stars (1983), with earlier titles like Andromeda Conquest (1982) and Cosmic Balance II (1983) showing early 4X ideas. Most 4X games are on PC because they use a mouse and keyboard, but some are on other platforms. Some 4X games mix in real-time elements, but they are usually slow and thoughtful. Some games offer a global-map mode that feels like 4X even if it isn’t labeled as such.
