Linköping is a city in southern Sweden with about 167,000 residents. It is the seat of Linköping Municipality and the capital of Östergötland County. The city is known for its grand cathedral, a major university, and a growing high‑tech industry. It also aims to become carbon‑neutral by 2025.

Location and history
Linköping sits on the Östergötland Plain, about 40 kilometers from Norrköping and not far from the sea thanks to nearby waterways like the Göta Canal and Roxen lake. It has a long history as an important religious center; the diocese formed in the late 11th century and the cathedral’s oldest parts are from the 12th century. Nearby Vreta Kloster was founded in 1128. The city has hosted important political events and was a center of learning, with early schools dating back to medieval times.

Industry and education
A turning point came in 1937 with the founding of the Saab aircraft industry, which spurred rapid growth. Linköping University was established in the 1960s and today the city is a hub for high‑tech and software companies. Saab remains a key employer, known for the Gripen fighter jet and other aviation work, and the city hosts major IT firms and technology companies. Linköping is connected by a main southern railway line and has its own airport, Linköping/ Saab Airport, which offers some international connections.

What to see and do
The city offers a mix of historic and modern sights. Old Linköping is a living‑museum district that preserves the town’s traditional charm. The Flygvapenmuseum (Air Force Museum), the Castle and Cathedral Museum, and Östergötlands Länsmuseum showcase local history. The cathedral is a dominant landmark, and nearby parks like Trädgårdsföreningen (The Garden Society) and the Tinnerö oak woodland provide great green spaces. Waterways such as the Göta Canal, the Berg locks, and the Kinda Canal are popular for boats, and the lakes Roxen and Rängen invite outdoor activities.

Culture and sports
Linköping has a vibrant cultural scene with orchestras, choirs, festivals, and concerts. It hosts NärCon, the Nordic region’s large anime and gaming convention, and supports a strong sports culture. The city is home to the world’s large floorball club, Linköping Innebandy, and to hockey team Linköpings HC and women’s football team Linköpings FC, which has won national cups. The University area also fosters student art and music, including the notable Linköping University Male Voice Choir.

People and life
The city is diverse and growing, with a significant share of residents who were born abroad. The immigrant communities include people from Iraq, Somalia, Eritrea, Iran, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Linköping combines a deep historical past with a dynamic present, making it a forward‑looking centre for education, culture, and technology.
