Lightsaber

A lightsaber is a fictional energy sword from Star Wars. It has a blade made of light that comes from a metal hilt. The blade is about three feet long and glows in various colors.

Jedi and Sith use lightsabers. Jedi typically have blue or green blades, while Sith usually have red blades. Other colors appear as well, including purple, white, yellow, and even black in some stories. The color comes from a kyber crystal inside the hilt, which reflects a Force user’s connection to the Force. Red crystals are created by “bleeding” a crystal with dark side energy.

There are several variations. The standard lightsaber is a single blade, but there are dual-bladed sabers (like Darth Maul’s), curved-hilt sabers (Count Dooku’s), crossguard sabers (Kylo Ren’s), and the Darksaber, a unique black blade tied to Mandalorian traditions. Other unusual designs appear in extended Star Wars stories.

What the blade can do: it can cut through many substances, burn or melt materials, and deflect blaster bolts. It can be deflected by another lightsaber, energy shields, or certain metals such as beskar and phrik. The hilt is usually built by the user, so each lightsaber is unique.

In the real world, lightsabers were created with visual effects and sound design. The hum of the blade and its crackling sounds were developed for the films, and the glow was added in post-production.

Lightsabers are one of the most recognizable symbols of Star Wars, featured across movies, TV shows, games, and toys. Fans can even visit special experiences at Disney parks to learn about the lightsabers or create their own.
