Life's Force
Life’s Force is a 1979 jazz album by trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah. It was his first release as a leader, recorded at Blue Rock Studio in New York City and issued by About Time Records (AT-1001).
Abdullah is joined on the album by Vincent Chancey (horn), Muneer Abdul Fatah (cello), Jay Hoggard (vibraphone), Jerome Hunter (bass), and Rashied Sinan (drums). On the cover, the artist is listed simply as Abdullah.
The project grew from a dance work also titled Life’s Force. In 1979, while Abdullah was music director of Dianne McIntyre’s dance company, the piece premiered in San Antonio, Texas. McIntyre described it as a dance-music collaboration where dancers become part of the band, with Abdullah helping develop the work. She said the piece celebrates energy and inner spirit, with a rhythm that continues throughout and after the performance.
A New York City performance drew praise from The New York Times, whose critic Jennifer Dunning called it “vibrant” and “hard-pushing,” and noted the choreography as full of invention.
Critics’ notes:
- AllMusic’s Scott Yanow called Life’s Force a stimulating release, praising Abdullah’s appealing tone, adventurous style, and the unusual blend of colorful instruments as a key reason to listen.
- The Jazz Spot complimented its sophistication and harmony, highlighting the balance between melodic focus and detailed exploration.
Track details: “Assunta” was composed by Cal Massey; the remaining tracks were composed by Ahmed Abdullah.
